Another round of annual Citizenship Award honorees’ names have been etched permanently on a plaque at Broadalbin-Perth Intermediate School to be hung alongside plaques with inscriptions of student winners’ names from the past 16 years.
At the end of each school year, two students from each class are given the Citizenship Award, which honors them for displaying the six pillars of character — respect, trustworthiness, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
“We spend a lot of time thinking about academics, but we want to show students that strong character is valuable,” Principal Dan Casey said. “It’s our responsibility as elementary educators to encourage positive character traits.”
The 2015-16 school year winners got their first look at the plaque this past week, as Principal Dan Casey gathered the group for a photo. He emphasized the importance of the Citizenship Award and congratulated them all on their efforts.
The Citizenship Award culminates the character awards BPIS gives each month throughout the school year. Teachers in each class nominate students who exhibit one of the six pillars of character to be honored at the monthly Community Connections assemblies.
