Broadalbin-Perth is launching its new Parent University with October workshops designed to help parents support their children in developing good study skills and managing stress and anxiety.
The goal of Parent University is to increase parent involvement in B-P schools and empower parents to raise children who are successful in school and in life. According to Director of Special Programs Christine Foglia-Sands, research has shown that parents can increase a child’s academic success through their involvement with schools and communities. Parental involvement improves student morale, attitudes, and academic achievement across all subject areas.
The first Parent University event, “Homework Help and Study Skills,” is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 11. The session, which is for parents of middle and high school students and their children, s designed to improve student performance in school. Dr. Lawrence Silverman, a certified school psychologist and president of Capital District Consulting, will explain how students learn, present strategies for parents to use to motivate their children, help them manage time and ease test anxiety. Register for this event.
On Oct. 20, Parent University will welcome Dr. Gina Cosgrove, a founding partner of Campbell House Psychological Associates, to speak with parents about “Coping with Stress and Anxiety.” This family-friendly event, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is open to parents and children of all ages. Dr. Cosgrove will provide parents with information and practical tips for helping their children cope with stress and anxiety in healthy ways. Meanwhile, kids are invited to join B-P physical education teacher Tucker Gifford to practice yoga and learn mindfulness techniques. Register for this event.
The district is offering incentives for parents to attend Parent University events through a punch card: Parents who attend three Parent University sessions during the 2016-17 school year will receive a B-P t-shirt, and those who attend five sessions will receive a B-P sweatshirt.
