BPMS students invited to take a hike with wilderness survival experience

Sign up for the course

Broadalbin-Perth students entering grades 6-9 are invited to join science teacher Michael Nacheman for a true wilderness education experience, Wednesday through Friday, July 20-22. This three-day enrichment course — which is being offered free of charge for all interested students — will include a guide to wilderness survival suitable for middle school-age students. The deadline to register for the course is Tuesday, July 19.

On Wednesday, July 20, students will meet at the middle school at 7:30 a.m. to learn about the essential components of wilderness survival, including orienteering, identifying plants and animals, creating shelters, finding water, making a fire, and maintaining a positive attitude. Wednesday’s session will end at 11 a.m.

Students will take what they learned on the trail with an extended day hike to Spruce Mountain (3.1 miles) starting at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, July 21. On the final day of the course, Friday, July 22, students will hike up Hadley Mountain Trail (2.4 miles).

On Thursday and Friday, students should bring plenty of water, as well as a bagged lunch. They are also expected to wear clothing and footwear suitable for hiking.

Students will meet at B-P Middle School at 7:30 a.m. each day of the course. On Wednesday, the course will end at 11 a.m.; on Thursday and Friday, students may be picked up at the school at 1 p.m.
