Broadalbin-Perth is bringing the “More than Sad” program to Parent University, Tuesday, Nov. 6, in a special session focused on mental health and suicide prevention education for parents and B-P staff members. The session is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Virtual AP Room at BPHS.

“More than Sad,” a program of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), has taught communities across the country how to be smart about mental health. During the Nov. 6 Parent University workshop, parents and staff members will learn how to recognize signs of depression and other mental health issues in their children, how to initiate a conversation about mental health, and how to seek help.

Marianne Reid Schrom, a 1996 B-P graduate and former BPHS teacher, will lead the discussion. Schrom is a member of the National Loss & Healing Council of the AFSP.

Parents or staff members interested in attending this session are encouraged to complete the online registration form, which helps organizers with planning activities. Note, this session is NOT appropriate for children; however, free childcare will be available.

Information about other upcoming Parent University sessions is available on the B-P website.

Parent University is a community collaboration led by Broadalbin-Perth. Through Parent University, Broadalbin-Perth partners with community agencies and organizations to offer free courses, family events and activities that will equip families with new or additional skills, knowledge, resources and the confidence to become full partners in their children’s education. The goal of Parent University is to increase parent involvement in B-P schools and empower parents to raise children who are successful in school and in life. Research has shown that parents can increase a child’s academic success through their involvement with schools and communities. Parental involvement improves student morale, attitudes, and academic achievement across all subject areas.
