Students in Mamie Allegretti’s French 5 class at Broadalbin-Perth High School explored French culture in Upstate New York during a field trip on Thursday, March 15.

Their first stop was The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, where they viewed an exhibit of works by Alphonse Mucha, a Czech artist whose art nouveau posters were popular in Paris around the turn of the 20th century. According to The Hyde Collection’s website, Mucha’s work “helped shape the aesthetics of French art… and formed the cornerstone of the international art nouveau movement.” While they were at The Hyde, students also took in works by other French and European artists, including Botticelli, Rembrandt, Claude Lorrain, Edgar Degas, Cézanne, and Pablo Picasso.

Before returning to B-P, the students stopped in Saratoga for lunch at Ravenous Crâperie to sample savory and sweet crepes and pommes frites (french fries).

According to Allegretti, the students have been working on writing a newspaper and, as a follow-up to their field trip, will write newspaper articles in French about Alphonse Mucha, art nouveau, and the trip in general.

Students who successfully complete French 5 at BPHS receive college credit through Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
