For months, students at Broadalbin-Perth Intermediate School have been working with teaching assistant and local artist Linda Biggers to create a mosaic of cut-glass tiles depicting the six pillars of character. The mosaic, “Tree of Character,” will be unveiled during a reception at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, at the Broadalbin-Perth Middle School gymnasium.
The six pillars of character – respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship – are each represented in 2-foot-by-2-foot squares that make up the larger image of the mosaic. Biggers designed the mosaic based on ideas solicited from BPIS students.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to learn how to collaborate on a single, large-scale artwork, while also gaining a better understanding of the pillars of character,” Biggers said.
The mosaic was made possible thanks to a $3,000 grant from Saratoga Arts and a $750 grant from the B-P Education Foundation. The completed mosaic will be displayed in the intermediate school. At the conclusion of capital project renovations, it will be permanently mounted in the renovated B-P Elementary School at the district’s Perth campus.
Members of the school community interested in attending the reception should RSVP to Jennifer Szumowski at szumowskij@bpcsd.org no later than June 1.
