Students in Megan Floyd’s pre-kindergarten class have been regular visitors to Willing Helpers’ Home in Johnstown during the 2017-18 school year. During their most recent visit on Thursday, May 18, students brought puzzles, books, playdough and beading activities to share with the residents.

Floyd said that, through the visits, the students have established a bond with residents of the home. “By making a connection with the seniors, our children learn respect, empathy and good citizenship by caring about others,” she said.

During previous trips, the students and residents have collaborated on craft projects to decorate doors in the home for holiday celebrations. The children and seniors also share a simple snack and sing songs together during their visits.

“Our senior ladies (as we affectionately refer to them) are always happy to see us,” Floyd said. “Each visit, more and more residents have participated and we have noticed an increase in their engagement with the children. The kids love the interaction and the one-on-one attention, and the residents absolutely adore the children. It is a very sweet experience for all involved.”

A grant from the Broadalbin-Perth Education Foundation paid for the class’ transportation to and from Willing Helpers’ Home. The grant also funded art supplies that the students used to make artwork for the Meals on Wheels program in collaboration with Fulton County Office for the Aging.
