If you’ve got new and gently used hats and sunglasses stowed away at home, two Broadalbin-Perth students are hoping you’ll consider donating them to their Hats for Haiti project.
Seventh-grader Robby Carr and ninth-grader Ashlyn Hill are collecting ball caps and wide-brimmed hats, as well as sunglasses, to be taken to Haiti during an upcoming VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) mission trip.
VOSH is a nonprofit organization that provides free eye care and glasses to the poor in developing countries. Carr’s aunt is heading to Haiti on a VOSH mission trip and will take the donations with her. Haiti has a high rate of preventable blindness, and it is hoped that providing them with eye protection will help reduce the number of Haitians who suffer from vision problems.
Carr and Hill hope to collect 500 hats at their collection points, which include boxes in the high school and middle school offices until Feb. 17. All sizes are welcome.
