During the first Parent University workshop of 2017, Broadalbin-Perth parents and guardians will learn how to safeguard their children from the many dangers and pitfalls that the Web and social media present. The Jan. 11 workshop, “Keeping Kids Safe Online,” features B-P computers teacher Allison Renda and State Trooper Investigator Daryl Bazan and begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Virtual AP Room at BPHS.

Renda will provide an introduction to digital citizenship and share resources parents can use to monitor their children’s online activity. Bazan will share real-life cyber stories, talk about the dangers of putting personal information on social media, review laws on cyberbullying, and discuss safe practices for being online. Stephen Gennett, B-P’s director of instructional technology, will also be on hand to help answer technical questions.

Although this session is appropriate – and encouraged – for children in middle and high school, free childcare will be available for younger children. When parents register for the workshop, they will have the opportunity to indicate how many children they will be bringing; this is important information to ensure the district has enough childcare providers on hand.

Parents who participate in three Parent University events during the 2016-17 school year are eligible to receive a B-P t-shirt; those who participate in five Parent University events are eligible to receive a B-P sweatshirt. Parent University punch cards are available at all events.
