A representative of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office in a ceremony today honored Broadalbin-Perth Middle School science teacher Anita Stabrowski for receiving the Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award, presenting her with a check for $5,000.
The award honors outstanding individuals who exemplify the highest standards of teaching and work to foster creativity, instill a love of learning, and inspire independent thinking and student initiative. The award was announced over the summer, but Friday’s event at the middle school gym brought Stabrowski’s fellow teachers together for more formal presentation of the $5,000 award money.
“You are so fortunate to have someone of this caliber and such talent sharing her gifts with you,” said Commissioner Sam Roberts, who led the ceremony on behalf of the governor’s office.
He pointed to Stabrowski’s work on the Future Cities program, her role as an adviser to the Science Club and her status as a New York State Master Teacher.
For her part, Stabrowski thanked her colleagues and the school district for what they do to foster success. “You have to have great support, and I am fortunate enough to have colleagues and an administration that allows me the freedom to do those things,” she said.
Stabrowski will use the $5,000 for professional development activities, including coursework to enhance expertise, attendance at a state or national conference, or enrollment in a summer institute or certification program. She also will serve as a teacher ambassador and have the opportunity to share her insights on professional learning with leaders in education, regional development experts and policymakers.
