Dear parents and guardians,
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the state has begun labeling areas of New York with high COVID-19 rates as yellow, orange, or red zones. These zones are based on the COVID-19 positivity rates in those areas. If a region is placed in one of these zones, there are various restrictions for businesses, gatherings, and schools.
Broadalbin-Perth is NOT currently in one of these zones. However, with cases of COVID-19 on the rise in the region, we are making plans in case our area is designated as a yellow zone.
If the following conditions were met, Broadalbin-Perth would be in a yellow zone:
- Fulton County’s seven-day rolling average infection rate is 3.5% or higher for 10 consecutive days
- Fulton County’s current seven-day infection rate is 3.0%
- Fulton County’s seven-day average of new positives is 8 or more
- Fulton County’s current seven-day average is 9.4
Data by county is available on the state Department of Health (DOH) website.
DOH requires that schools in yellow zones test 20% of their in-person students, faculty, and staff over the two-week period immediately following the yellow zone designation in order to remain open for in-person instruction. We are actively preparing for in-school testing in case our area is designated as a yellow zone.
We are optimistic that we will have testing capacity in place by the time in-person and hybrid learners are expected to return to school in January, so if we are placed in a yellow zone after Jan. 1, our plan would be to follow DOH’s testing requirements. We will share more information about this plan and what it would mean for your child in the coming days.
Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility as we navigate this situation together!
Stephen Tomlinson
Superintendent of Schools
